Spiderman: Web of Shadows Review

Posted by Trilithium 4 December 13, 2008

Welcome back to the review roundup. Once again we delve deep within the heart of games and decide their fate. The next game on my list is Spider man: Web of Shadows. Which is co-developed by Shaba Games/Treyarch and published by Activision. Does it live up to the Spider man license, or is it an epic fail? The Spider man games for the most part have been fairly good since Spider man 2. The third title was well done in most respects while Spider man: Friend or Foe was not good. So how does Web of Shadows fair?

The story for the latest Spider man installment is all about the the symbiote. In staying true to where Spider man 3 left off, the black symbiote suit was indeed alien. And now, there is a full scale alien invasion on the rise. The game starts off like previous Spider man video games, randomly stopping crime as it happens. You'll fight gangsters that are a lot like the gangsters you see in Saints Row. But, without the constant profanity's that come with it. And you'll eventually work your way up to Wilson Fisk's cronies and many more. Plus, you will be joined by other Marvel characters throughout the game. Such as Wolverine, Vulture, MJ, Black Cat and many more. You'll also have to save civilians (optional) quite frequently and take them to the hospital, save them from a burning car, or catch them falling off a building. Whatever the situation might be spider man is there. The big story arch is the fight against Venom and the alien symbiotes. You'll need to stop them before the alien invaders and Venom destroy the world. And of course the big invasion starts in New York City.

Just like in Spider man 3, you can change from your red suit to your black suit seamlessly simply by clicking in the left analog stick. Although this is a good Idea the placement for such a feature is bad. I found myself constantly changing my suit during combat accidentally because of the bad button placement. Now swinging threw the city is as fun as ever. But when it came to running up the wall of a skyscraper the camera view became awkward and hard to control. Or even sticking to the wall of a building. Now when your fighting on the side of a building it can be a bit chaotic and again the camera view is constantly fighting you. So, yes the camera is an issue in this game. The games combat system relies heavily on button mashing combos. This is not necessarily a bad thing but some people may be turned off by the simplistic fighting mechanic. I enjoyed it because the combos you can pull off look and feel like something Spider man would do in the movies. And there are some devastating violent combos to perform. One of the best parts of the combo system is the ability to fight in midair. Simply press the Y button and Spider man will shoot a web at the enemy and zip toward him. This is an excellent way to string together combos, and it's possible to chain together a 250 hit combo! You can lock onto to enemies, but it's poorly executed. In fact, there were times when I was locked onto a target and suddenly it stopped working. I would avoid the lock on system all together. It just gets you killed.

A welcome addition to the game is the upgrade system. And it's fairly extensive. As I said before there are two suits. Each of them with their own unique upgrades and abilities. I found that both suits had an advantage. But how you decide to use these suites is up to you. I liked them both. I found that the red suit worked best for close combat and the black suit seemed to work best at long range. But there are many variations. I found that mixing it up was the best way to go overall. When you upgrade your suits you can choose to upgrade your combos and special abilities. And there are a lot of upgrades too. I wasn't fully upgraded until nearly the end of the game. There are also Spider-tokens spread throughout the city just like in previous Spidey games. These tokens will help increase your swing speed and your health bar. So, collecting tokens on your way to a mission is a good idea. You will also get to make some decisions in the game. It basically comes down to good or evil. I was an evil Spider Man. Sometimes its just good to be bad. And of course there is spidey sense. This ability will help you detect nearby enemies . It can be useful but you don't really need it.

The graphics for the game are nothing special. I think the graphics were better for Spider Man 3 then they are for SM:Web of Shadows. The draw distance is horrendous and seriously lacking detail. The character models are average, the cut scenes have a horrible presentation, and the animations for the most part are just plain bad. Although, Spider man and some of the simbiotes animations aren't to bad. Now the frame rate for the game is good until you reach act 3. Once you get to that point in the game, the lag is so bad it's almost unplayable. In fact, I don't know how I got threw the entire game. It's really that bad. I don't know how they got this game approved for gold status when clearly the game was not ready.

And finally the audio. The sound effects and music are well done. Both the music and sound effects mimic the movies likeness. But once you get to the terrible voice acting you'll forget all about the positive notes. Spider mans voice would have to be the worst of them all. There is absolutely no excuse for this lame voice acting. It completely ruins the Spider man experience and to make things worse the lines they read off are so damn cheesy! Voice acting and a good script are key features to making a good game. And yet the developer decided to omit these very important details. Anyways, the campaign is rather lengthy. It will take you about 15-20 hours to complete, maybe less. It all depends on whether or not you choose to participate in side missions. But those can get repetitive. Web of Shadows has it's moments and its a step up from Friend or Foe. But the technical issues weigh in heavy on this one. Lets all hope the next Spider man game is better.

I got Spiderman 3 the game thinking it would be really good seeing how I loved the second one but it was very samey. This one never really interested me and I think a symbiote Wolverine is so tacky. good review

If I do video reviews I fear that you won't read my written review. I work hard on those reviews, and I don't want it to be for nothing.
